Market Recap – What’s up, what’s down

Zucchini prices continue to rise

Both yellow and green zucchinis are experiencing significant price increases this week. This surge in prices is primarily due to the conclusion of the zucchini season in Mexico, which has led to a transition period as the supply shifts to crops from the East Coast. As a result, the market is currently at its peak in terms of pricing. Expect local products to start in 2 weeks!

Price Drops

These items that have dropped in price this week:

PEPPER SERRANO (3696), POBLANO (3699), SHISHITO (3019)

Specialty pepper is finally dropping in price just in time for grilling, as production volume increases.

GRAPES BLACK (2543), GREEN (2548), RED (2553)

ASPARAGUS WHITE “AAA” (4699)

End-of-season price drop before the product sells out. Stock up before they’re gone!

Introducing Pirate Produce!

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news with you! Last week we received our first shipment from Pirate Produce, run by farmer Shane. Shane’s journey is pretty inspiring—he started as a chef, then became a farmer, and now he’s the head grower for RPM in the Niagara Region. We’re lucky to have exclusive access to their overflow products this growing season!

Currently, the heirloom field mix contains Organic Green Incised, Green Sweet Crisp, Red Sweet Crisp, and Red Butter lettuces. Shane will add more Mizuna-type mixes as the season progresses, ensuring a steady supply until the end of summer.

If you’re currently using our Artisan lettuce blend from California, this is a wonderful local alternative for the summer. It offers a high quality mix at a similar price, plus the added bonus of supporting local produce!

Keep an eye out for more Pirate Produce products to be added to our catalogue throughout the summer.

Red Flags – Get the scoop on shortages

Brussel Sprout Quality issues

The Salinas area is about 4 to 6 weeks away from harvest time. Because of this, we expect prices for Mexican product to be higher, and you might notice some differences in quality from week to week for the time being.

Raspberries moving from Mexico to California

Raspberries are tasting great right now, but they’re a bit softer than usual, which means they might not last as long in storage. Good news, though! Starting Thursday, we’ll be switching to California raspberries, so you can look forward to better quality soon.

All Wrapped Up!

These items are out of stock for the season. Feel free to ask your rep for some great alternatives!

Italian Radicchios (Castelfranco) – We are moving over to USA product as the season wraps up

White Asparagus – 14 cases available then product is finished for the year. If you need it for an event, please reserve early!

Short Ship Sparks Notes

Basil Bunches – Sudden increase in sales resulted in shortages late last week. Product has been restocked!

Green Beans– Anticipating fluctuations in quality and price until the local product is ready.

Pea Shoots – Small gap due to purchasing; no issues carrying over to this week.

Yellow Zucchini – Local products will be available in two weeks, which will ease shortages.
