Market Recap – What’s up, what’s down

Increase in Zucchini Prices

Both yellow and green zucchinis are experiencing significant price increases this week. This surge in prices is primarily due to the conclusion of the zucchini season in Mexico, which has led to a transition period as the supply shifts to crops from the East Coast. As a result, the market is currently at its peak in terms of pricing. Expect local product to start in 3 weeks!

Valentine Radishes on the rise

We’re having some shortages because of bad weather in Mexico, which has made prices go up. Last week, we used products from the USA, but they were too big so, we’ve decided to keep using the Mexican crop for now.

Local Spotlight – Ontario’s finest

Ontario Field Strawberries – Tigchelaar Farms strawberries are here! Expect a slow start due to weather. These will be sold by the case only.

Heirloom Lettuce Blend – New producer alert! This summer, you’ll find special veg from farmer Shane of Pirate Produce. This week, we’re featuring his lettuce mix, which includes Green Incised, Green Sweet Crisp, Red Sweet Crisp, and Red Butter lettuce.

Baby Zucchini with Flowers attached – Starting this week, supply will be *inconsistent*. If it rains, they do not harvest, so keep this in mind when ordering and printing your menus. 🌧🌧 These are not ideal for stuffing, so if that is what you’re looking for, stick with the Zucchini Flower (Male) SKU, which is available for pre-order.

Basil Bushels – Starting this week! Perfect for pesto production

English Peas– Set to begin early next week

Patty Pans – Set to begin late June

Yellow Zucchini – Ontario product starting in ~3 weeks

Tigchelaar Berry Farms – from the Niagara region

Since the mid-1960s, the Tigchelaar family has been on a journey of growth, with a special love for strawberries. They specialize in Day-neutral strawberries, which are pretty amazing because they can flower and produce fruit continuously. This is all thanks to their unique ability to ignore the usual daylength cues that control when flowers start to bloom.

Red Flags – Get the scoop on shortages

Cantaloupe Quality Issues

Yuma cantaloupe season began last week, and the first melons are smaller. This will likely continue until the middle of next week. As farmers start to pick from new fields, the melons will get bigger and the supply will increase each week through June. Early reports show sweetness levels are low, but this will improve as they move away from the early fields affected by the weather.

All Wrapped Up!

These items are finished up for the season. Ask your rep for recommendations on substitutes.

Hydroponic Strawberries – will be unavailable when field strawberries arrive. We’ll bring them back in the fall after the field season ends.

Ramps – Finished for the year!

Short Ship Sparks Notes

Grape Tomatoes – Quality issues last week have been resolved.

Lime Leaves – Imported product is moving faster than shipments are coming in! If you use this on a regular basis, talk to your rep about a weekly standing order.

Chives – Poor quality and shelf life on the batch coming in before the weekend. Product has been pulled and the issue resolved.

Burratini – Sudden increase in sales resulted in shortages late last week. Product has been restocked!

Blueberries – Issues due to heavy rain. Moved to Mexican product for better consistency in supply and quality.
